Ethan was born November 1970 in Texas. His film debut came opposite River Phoenix and Jason Presson in Joe Dante's Explorers (1985). In 1989 he also appeared in Peter Weir's Dead Poets Society opposite Robin Williams and Robert Sean Leonard and also co-starred in Dad opposite Ted Danson and Jack Lemmon. The early 90s saw him appear in a variety of films such as White Fang, A Midnight Clear, Alive, Reality Bites and Before Sunrise. 1992 saw him make his Broadway debut in a production of Chekhov's "The Seagull". The late 90s saw him publish his first novel "The Hottest State" and star in such films as Gattaca, Great Expectations and Snow Falling on Cedars. Since the nineties his films have included Tape alongside then-wife Uma Thurman and Robert Sean Leonard, Training Day alongside Denzel Washington which earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Supporting Actor. He then starred in the thriller Taking Lives and the sequel Before Sunset. More recently he has starred in the remake of Assault on Precinct 13, Lord of War opposite Nicolas Cage and the film version of his novel The Hottest State and the crime drama Before The Devil Knows You're Dead.
