...Theater Review: ‘The Metal Children’...
The casting here is excellent, especially Crudup as Tobin. He’s an emotional wreck when first seen; he drinks too much, takes various experimental substances, pines for his wife who has left him, and has no idea what he is getting into. Particularly revealing is how shocked he becomes when he sees all the meanings other people have derived from his words, when his intent may have been completely different.

Filmmaking sisters from Madison combine forces with duo from Minneapolis independent film studio
Almost a decade since they made their last movie, 2001's "13 Conversations About One Thing," Madison natives Jill and Karen Sprecher are coming home.
Well, almost home. Starting Monday, the Sprecher sisters will begin shooting their next movie, "The Convincer," in Minnesota. The film, written by the sisters and directed by Jill, stars Greg Kinnear, Billy Crudup and Alan Arkin (who was also in "13 Conversations"), and is a Wisconsin-set story of a desperate salesman trying to acquire a rare violin. What Performances Do You Think Were Overlooked In 2009?l
Posted: January 30, 2010
My other all-but-forgotten pick is Billy Crudup in Watchmen. There are probably a lot of viewers who have come away dismissing his soft monotone as a bad performance. Watch it again. Dr. Manhattan was a character I couldn't grasp onto in the book. I never could hear his voice, I never could understand him to any degree because he was just so unnatural. Crudup nailed that, and yet made it instantly relatable. He's so detached, distant, and cool. Yet there's warbles of uncertainty, bewilderment, and sadness in his voice Read More

Is there any actor whose career you'd like to emulate? Yeah, sure, there's so many really. People like Billy Crudup and Sam Rockwell; they have very tremendous range, doing theater and cinema. There are heroes of mine, like Michael Caine ... I loved Peter O'Toole. Maybe O'Toole and [Richard] Burton and those boys, but without the alcoholism.

Get Ready to 'Eat, Pray, Love' With Julia This Summer
It's been a while since we've seen Julia Roberts in her element: sweeping romantic comedies. But what better project to place her back atop her perch as "America's Sweetheart" than the film adaptation of the 2006 best-selling memoir, Eat, Pray, Love. [More]
Best pictures: The top 10 movies of the decade
Despite what it says up there in the headline, I think we can all agree that what follows is most definitely NOT the definitive list of the best films of the aughts (2000-2009). In truth, it is impossible to produce such a list. I am but an individual, and though I spent an absurd amount of time in the last 10 years watching, talking and writing about movies, your opinion and mine are equally valid when it comes to judging art. Stu Pollard, filmmaker
Resonance is one reason why “Almost Famous” is my film of the decade. Its timeless nature stems from a portrayal of the '70s so acute that first-time viewers may not realize that Stillwater is a fictitious band. The film has dozens of memorable scenes and lines ("I'm about to boldly go where many men have gone before"), skyrocketed the career of Kate Hudson ("What kind of beer?"), and features sterling performances from actors both well known (Frances McDormand, Jason Lee, Philip Seymour Hoffman) and less so (Billy Crudup, Patrick Fugit). Most of all, though, "Almost Famous" showcases a filmmaker who I greatly admire, Cameron Crowe, working at the top of his game. [More]
